Immersion Schooling

My two preschoolers go to French immersion school, which means the entire curriculum is taught in French (except for English class). I only speak English, but I’m ‘racing’ them to the fluency finish line. You know, so they don’t talk about me while I’m standing right there. So far I can only curse.

Eva making her tigress cub growl after her face painting was finished. I’m always on the lookout for bilingual events in the area for the kids, especially in French (their school language). Last year we discovered Festival International de Louisiane which is the largest Francophone music fest in the USA. It’s one of the few events [...]

Carnaval de Nice parade, 2007 When I was traveling in the south of France with my husband in 2007 we experienced something we hadn’t expected. We’d arrived in February for the Carnaval de Nice, and being from New Orleans we thought it would be something like Mardi Gras. But after we settled in our hotel [...]

La Mère Aventurière: The Halfway Mark

January 26, 2012 Immersion Schooling

It seems like minutes ago that I dropped my 3-year-old off for her first day of French immersion school, but the year is already half over. During the holiday break I was able to take stock of what my daughter Éva was learning. In between baking batches of cookies and coloring reindeer I’d sneak in [...]

La Mère Aventurière: French Themed or French Speaking?

November 11, 2011 Immersion Schooling

Finding French themed activities in the New Orleans area is fairly easy. Between the French immersion schools (about ten now), local French organizations, and numerous French artists and French-owned businesses, it’s not hard to get in touch with your Francophile side here. There is always some event featuring French food, wine, art, film or other [...]

La Mère Aventurière: Singing and Cursing

November 8, 2011 Immersion Schooling

“Mangent, mangent, mangent…” the soft little singing drifted from the room next to me. “Is there a little French zombie in my house?” My giggling daughter enters the room. “Nooooon, Mommy! I’m not a zom-vee!” “ZomBEE,” I clarify. “It’s the same word in French too.” “I’m a poisson.” “You’re a zombie FISH?” More laughing. “No, [...]

La Mère Aventurière: Kids vs. Grown-Ups

My French challenge has been going on for two weeks now and things are still going steady. I only manage about four days a week of home immersion instead of the seven I’d hoped for, but some schedule changes might improve that. My weekly conversation class is fun and I’m noticing results already, but I [...]

La Mère Aventurière: The Battle and the Little Colonel

Autumn in New Orleans makes me optimistic. Suddenly everything that felt hard to do in 100 degree temperatures seems tolerable when we can open the windows again. In early June I’d contemplated learning French with my daughter, but it really didn’t feel like a good idea until I could drink hot coffee and wear boots [...]

La Mère Aventurière: Mommy’s Turn To Learn

September 16, 2011 Immersion Schooling

I’ve decided to do it. AGAIN! I’m going to race my 3 year-old to the French fluency finish line. I’ll be chronicling the whole humiliating comedy enlightening experience at Nola Française, but I’ll post the links here as usual. I was curled up on the sofa with Éva watching Tinkerbell in French, or “Clochette,” as [...]

La Mère Aventurière: The First Day

September 2, 2011 Immersion Schooling

“How was your first day of the new school?” I asked when I picked up Éva. “I’m not French yet,” she replied, looking somewhat disappointed, like she was expecting a software upgrade. “Well, it might take a while for you to speak French,” I offered, but she’d already moved on to other topics. She explained [...]

La Mère Aventurière: Premiere of an Immersion School

Éva was sobbing in the back seat of the car. “I ddddon’t want to leeeeaaave!” she stuttered through tears as we drove home. You’ve got to be kidding me, I thought. We had just attended her French immersion school’s open house, and she had a great time. I’d told her earlier that we were  going [...]
